feature story final

Every year thousands of junior and senior girls dream about going to one of the biggest events of the school year and that is prom. probably the biggest thing they...we girls think about most is who and how we will be asked, our dresses, and the after party.

Last year I thought I was too cool to go since, you know, was 17 and too indie to set foot onto a dance floor yet alone set foot into a dress. after seeing all the pictures from last year and hearing about how friends had so much fun at the dance and the after parties something kind of pulled me out of that deep niche.  So not so surprisingly this year, I have wanted nothing more than to go. Party because its the last year that I will ever be in high school and because my friends were dying for me to be in their group.

As school year was going on and on my anxiety worrying about prom was increasing as well. Hearing about more and more people getting asked did not help much at all either. As I was talking to my one of my close friends boyfriend, I asked him how he was going to ask her. "You know those stars that glow in the dark and can stick them on the wall or ceilings?" he said, "Yes!" I respond eagerly wanting to know the rest of how he was going to ask her, he continued saying "I am going to write 'Prom?" in stars on her ceiling in her bedroom." He later took credit for being original with his "asking abilities" and of course my friend Alex agreed to go. In an not so elaborate or creative way, my friend Nicole and her date (who is a friend) said they pretty much talked about going and agreed right then and there that they were going together. Knowing that two of my close friends were going the pressure was on to get a date.

Nearly a few days after that, my friend Brian and I got together after school because we were doing last second cramming for our upcoming AP exam. As I sat myself down with loads of worksheets and note cards, and unbelievably huge amount knowledge to be gained, Brian and I started talking about what chapter we should start on. He handed me his book and told me to turn to page 465. As fast as he said that, in the back of my head I questioned myself as to how he could possibly know the exact page number without possibly looking at it right before. But as fast as he told me about the page number, that thought escaped my mind. Oblivious to pretty much anything at that moment, I was paging through the book until I got to a page where it had a hand-written piece of paper that said "prom?" written across it. surprised and shocked I smiled and said yes. Just like that I had a date...but no dress.

Coming up with the money for a prom dress I knew would be nearly impossible since my dad is not bill gates and my mom refused to pay for anything related to prom. Asking around to friends who have already been asked, they said they already went out and got their dresses or got them in the beginning of the school year (...why?!).  Unlike my friend Alex who her parents helped her pay for her $300+ dress and Nicole, whose step mom practically hand made her dress, I was on my own for this. But knowing that everyone already had their dresses and a lot of schools have already had their prom, I also knew finding a cute and inexpensive dress was slim to none.

Luckily, a few other friend of mine went last year unlike I did and had a few dresses that I could look at and try on. Thankfully, to my surprise, i found my friends older sisters dress that is absolutely gorgeous and  actually fits! the only problem with it though is that it is not the traditional bright, fun coloured dress, but a deep navy blue. now set on a date and a dress, my biggest of concerns were crossed off my list except the after party.

One night Alex, Nicole and I got together to discuss what the heck we should do, or if we should even have an after party at all since our budgets were small and we already spent money on our 26 person party bus. Stumped as to what we should do since we were broke teenagers, we turned to Alex's mom who seemed to have all the correct answers. Apparently, Eastview High School does this thing for after parties for prom that if you sign up for it, the school will give the host of the party $75 to pay for food and to ensure that all the students have a safe after party. To us, she just solved all of our problems for that night. Everyone would come over and we would hang out, eat, and have a great time.

For those thousands of girls who have dreamed of going to prom and finally knowing who and how they get asked, finding a prom dress, and having even more fun at the after party all come together for a fun and one of the most memorable nights of their high school careers.
