law and ethics

1. What are the 5 freedoms of the 1st amendment?
-speech
-religion
-assembly
-press
-petition the goverment...getting people to sign paper.


2. What is the Tinker Standard?-students speech cant be censored as long as it does not " materially disrupt class work or involve substantial disorder or invasion of the rights of others.'
-first court case that was in favor of students


3. What is the Frasier Standard?
-
inappropriate speech for class president
-cause school officials have an "interest in teaching students the boundaries of socially appropriate behavior," they can censor  student speechthat is vulgta or indecent, even if it does not cause a "material or substantial disruption"
-going against teachings/believings of school
-VULGAR SPEECH

4. What is the Hazelwood Standard?-1988. censors stories in student newspaper about teen pregnancy and divorce.
-censorship  of school- sponsored student expression is permissible when school officials can show that its "reasonably related to legitimate teaching concerns"

Definition:
Define “Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.
-telling of current events that are news worthy thru writing (news paper, magazine, Internet)


List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness.

1. timeliness- recent, up to date, current. weather, sports,

2. prominence- we care about important people. royal wedding, Obama getting a dog

3. proximity- care about news that's close to us. weather, traffic, house fires

4. significance- the bigger the event and the more people that are impacted the more important it is. metro dome, japan earthquake, 9/11.

5. unasualness- we care about things that don't happen often. murders, house fires,

6. human interest- feel good stories, uplifting. new baby dolphin born at zoo,




What are the advantages of print journalism?
1. stories go much more into detail

2. choose the stories you want to read and how much

3. access it with you

What are the advantages of broadcast journalism?

1. more timely than print

2. visual and audio = more powerful

3. ability to multitask


Why has online journalism (convergent media) become so popular?
- very timely, Internet had become more popular, faster, updated faster, make decisions on where to go, revolutionizing news.
